Guide to a Successful Career
Prologue
Expected requirements for a successful career

It is commonly believed that to be successful in a business or profession one should fulfil at least one, and preferably more, of the following criteria.

  • One should be from a rich or influential family, (born with a silver spoon in the mouth.)

  • Should have a very good academic record, (topper in school, college and university.)

  • Should be able to bribe his way through, (and be ever ready to face criminal cases.)
In addition,

most successful people suffer from hypertension, blood sugar, high cholesterol or other stress related problems.

Addiction to alcohol, smoking etc. are far too common among the so called successful people.

Quite a few persons who do not fulfill the aforesaid criteria
have been highly successful.
How ?

How was this paper written ?
  • A few industry leaders do not fulfil the expected criteria for success listed earlier.

  • Yet they have achieved spectacular success.

  • They are hard working and sincere to their work.

  • Yet they are free from stress related problems.

  • They are free from addictions, except for addiction to work.

Many such persons were contacted.
Most of them did not want to discuss the matter
A few admitted, invariably on condition of anonymity,
that they owed their success to the teachings of the Geetha.

As an example read the case of Glady Cherian.

This paper is written only on the basis of the views of such persons.

It is not based on the teaching of any sage, saint or scholar.

What is Bhagavat Geetha ?
Here is some back ground information.
  • The literal meaning of Bhagavat Geetha is the Song of God.

  • It is a part of the beginning of Bheesma Parva of Mahabharata.

  • It was narrated on the first day of the battle.

  • The battle took place 36 years before the beiginning of Kaliyuga.

  • April 2012 - March 2013 AD is the 5114th year of kaliyuga.
According to this calculation the Geetha is more than 5000 years old; but its teachings are as useful today as they were at the time of Kurukshetra battle.

On the battle field Arjun saw his respected elders (like Bheesma and Drona), cousins, nephews and other relatives facing him as the enemy.

Individually a few of them were invincible warriors and together they were formidable foes.

Arjun was so despondent that he told his charioteer, Lord Krishna, that he wanted to abandon the battle.

Lord Krishna narrated the Geetha and made Arjun overcome his despondency.

Quite a few people have been exceptionally successful in their careers by following the teachings of the Geetha, just as Arjun succeeded in the battle of Kurukshetra in spite of insurmountable odds.

You too can be highly successful by following the teaching of the Geetha

Sorrow and doubts of Arjuna

All of us face problems in our career; but our problems are nothing compared to those of Arjun.

  • He had to kill his own respected elders, kith and kin. (2-4)

  • He had to face adversaries more powerful than him.

  • He had doubts about many of the teachings of the Geetha. (3-1, 3-2, 4-4, 6-33)

  • He was not so ambititious. (1-32, 2-5)

  • Later he had to lose his son in the battle.

  • He was so dejected that he was preparing to immolate himself.
Yet he succeeded, by following the teachings of the Geetha.

You too can be succeed if you meticulously follow the teachings of the Geetha and diligently do your Karma

Reincarnation of the soul

The teachings of the Geetha are based on the theory of rebirth.

  • Examine the theory of rebirth scientifically, logically and critically.

  • Proceed beyond chapter 2, only if you can have firm faith in rebirth.

  • If your religion and education prevent you from believing in rebirth,
do not bother yourself with this paper or the teachings of the Geetha.
For a modern scientific analysis of the theory of rebirth and its application in medical science you may refer to the works of Dr. Brian Weiss

Under the able guidance of a few expert psychiatrists, many people, particularly in USA have recalled some of their past lives; but these recollections are only of human life times; where as the Indian scriptures speak of many non human past lives.

For a brief over view of the findings of the modern medical science on the reincarnation of the soul down load the essay on Reincarnation

Karma Yoga

The second shloka of Ishavasyopanishad says that one should desire to live for hundred years while doing useful work.

  • Geetha exhorts the reader to work with enthusiasm and fortitude. (18-25)

  • Lack of full concentration on work,
on the pretext of indifference to the results,
only to avoid bodily discomfort is hypocrisy. (18-8)

  • ... Yogah karmashu koushalam (2-50)
It is important to remember,
and to constantly remind oneself, that
full concentration on work, with attention to all the details, and continuous effort
to improve the efficiency and productivity
(... Yogah Karmasu Koushalam ...),
while remaining ever watchful about the moves of the adversaries, is the essence of the teachings of the Geetha.

One who knows and believes the teachings of the Geetha, but due to some compulsion, is engaged in work contrary to its teachings can expect to meet the fate of Bheesma.

It is a common misconception that Geetha teaches indifference to the results of action.

It is important to understand the true spirit of Niskama Karma.

Niskama Karma
Work without attachment

Niskama, i.e. non-attachment to the results, has been widely misunderstood as indifference to the results of one's action.

  • Non-attachment does not mean indifference to the results.

  • While planning and executing any work one must fully concentrate on the results and must go out of the way to get success.

  • Non-attachment should be thought of only when the work is complete in all respects and you have no more control on its outcome.

  • Non-attachment actually means moving on to the next work or next step without wasting time in brooding over what has already happened.

  • It does not mean that you should not analyze the work and its results to draw lessons for future guidance.

  • The really unattached worker is one who is able to move on to the next task with full energy and concentration, without brooding over past failures if any.
Work must be planned and executed with the sole aim of success.

To realize that failures are actually lessons on the pitfalls to be avoided in future is real Gyan

Knowledge is power
What is power ?
  • It is the power over self.

  • It is the power to overcome the six baser instincts, i.e. Shad Ripu.

  • It is the ability to avoid procrastination.

  • It is the ability to remain steadfast when faced with obstacles.

  • Knowledge is the ability to distinguish between fool hard bravery and calculated risk.
According to Bramhavidu Upanishad, just as butter is hidden by being uniformly distributed inside milk, there is science (Vigyan) residing in every phenomenon. It should be continuously churned with the mind as the churner.

True knowledge, understanding, and power over self (with ability to perform the work skillfully and with full concentration) are facilitated and augmented by meditation, i.e. Dhyan

Concentration and meditation

Ability to concentrate and focus your mind is most important.

  • Asanas and Pranayam prepare the body.

  • Constant practice is necessary.

  • Even Arjun, famous for his ability to concentrate on the target,
had doubts about the possibility of concentration. (6 - 33,34)
Practice of meditation and concentration helps one to focus his attention on the work at hand. Regular practice, gradually removes the distracting thoughts that may interfere with work.

Do not try to force your mind to concentrate. In your present routine some how take out one fixed hour, out of the 24, to practice Yoga, including meditation.

Work (Karma) performed with knowledge (Gyan) and understanding (Vigyan) as well as concentration (Dhyan) helps one to be truly unattached to the results of action and leads to devotion, i.e. Bhakti

Devotion, the simplest way of renunciation

Devotion should not be superstition or blind faith.

  • You should be devoted to the almighty God and not to the priest,

  • Blind adherence to the rituals is not devotion. In fact it hinders devotion.
One who neglects his duty, to complete the ritual of prayer or worship, is not a devotee

  • Every thing, and every one, is God's creation.
So wanton acts to harm any one hinders devotion.
True devotion can come only from proper understanding.
Satsang, Bhajan, Keerthan etc. are helpful, but only to a limited extent.

True devotion and proper understanding can come easily through critical study of the scriptures, i.e. Swadhyaya

How to read the Geetha

For adopting its teachings in day to day life so as to have a successful career it should be read critically and understood thoroughly.

  • If you do not know any Indian language you have to be satisfied with the translation; but such translations can never convey the complete and correct meaning of every Shloka.

  • If you know any Indian language, make sure to read the Sanskrith text which is available in all major Indian scripts.

  • Then read the translation to understand the meaning.

  • After reading the translation read the Sanskrith text again and try to make your own translation.

  • Very often you will find that you do not agree with the translation and interpretation given, even if it is by a renowned scholar.
Some of the statements in Geetha may appear illogical to you.
In such cases try to understand the text excluding such portions.

Meanings of those portions would be clear when you read Mahabharat and the Upanishads
to understand the circumstances prevailing when the Geetha was originally narrated.

Reading must be accompanied by practice

Practice the teachings of the Geetha
How to practice ?
  • The first step to practice is repeated reading.

  • Utilize as much of your liesure time as possible to read the Geetha.

  • If possible read the Mahabharath to understand the context.

  • At least read a translation or summary of Mahabharath.

  • Also read the extant Upanishads on which it is based.

  • When ever you face a problem or have to make a difficult decision
read the relevant chapter of the Geetha and think how it can help you.
You should particularly read the Shlokas on Niskama Karma when ever you find yourself worrying about an outcome over which you have no control.

Constantly focus your mind on the goal and pursue the path to it ruthlessly.

There is no room for emotion in performing a sacred duty.

Arjun had to be ruthless when

  • He placed Sikhandi in his chariot and shot arrows at Bheesma.

  • He was helped by Lord Krishna in killing Jaydrathha.

  • He killed Karna when the Karna's chariot wheel was stuck.

You can be as ruthless as Arjun only if you are sure that you are on the right path and not working with an ulterior motive.

If you are working against righteousness your ruthlessness would lead to failure, not only of career but also of heath.

Grandfather Bheesma fully understood the teachings of the Geetha. He knew the divinity of Lord Krishna, yet he was siding with the Kouravas, against his own conscience. Thus he ended up on the bed of arrows.

To be able to pursue the goal of success with full determination, it is better to keep your understanding of the Geetha secret.

Geetha Mahatmya

Varah Purana describes a conversation between the Earth (Bhudevi) and God, in which God describes the advantages of reading the Geetha.

  • Most of the advantages described appear incomprehensible in the light of the modern science.

  • By regularly reading a few or more stanzas of Geetha, after death one is expected to go to the abode of the sun, moon, ancestors or heaven.

  • The Mahatmya is not comprehensible even in the light of the findings of some of the modern psychiatrists regarding rebirth.
It is possible that the Mahatmya has been written for the gullible to motivate them to read the Geetha with the expectation that repeated readings will gradually improve their understanding.

A modern reader need not waste time in trying to understand what the Mahatmya really means. He should concentrate on success in his career and profession. For such success, the teachings of the Geetha are immensely helpful, and can more than make up for lack of any other requisite.

Why is it a secret ?

Geetha is only a book, available at the stall, for all and sundry to buy and read it. No harm can come to the knowledge what ever you do to the book. Secrecy is about your own interpretation, understanding and practice.

  • Discussions with a skeptic can affect your own conviction.

  • Your image in the public may not be, and need not be, of one who is a regular reader of Geetha and practitioner of its teachings.

  • In such cases your study and practice of Geetha should remain a secret if you do not want others to have undue expectations from you.
Even if you reveal your interpretation and understanding fully to a well meaning friend
  • If he is not serious he will not remember it.

  • If he is serious he will make his own interpretation different from yours.
So if you want to help some one encourage him to read the Geetha himself.

An ambitious professional can greatly benefit from the teachings of the Geetha for career advancement; but he can hardly claim to have fully understood them. Even the interpretations of the renowned sages and scholars are said to have been limited.

Limitations of understanding ?

There have been many commentaries (Bhashyas) on the Geetha right from Adi Shankaracharya upto the present day scholars.

  • The interpretation of each is different from the others.

  • If you read the different commentaries, you will invariably feel that one or more of them is not correct.

  • If you try to make your own interpretation it may be different from all the others.
And this difference in interpretation is another reason why the teachings of the Geetha must remain secret.

And this is a secret you cannot pass on, as the person whom you narrate it will have his own interpretation different from yours.

So read the Geetha and the other related scriptures like Mahabharath, critically and repeatedly, practice the teachings with discrimination to attain material success and happyness till the end.

At the fag end of life

When you are old and terminally ill, with no hope whatsoever of recovery, waiting for the end

  • Will you be repenting that you have been an educated professional or executive and not a criminal or member of a mafia gang who is materially much better off than you ?

  • Will you be calmly waiting for the end satisfied with the realisation that you have tried to give your best to your employers, customers, clients, family and society ?

  • What can the teachings of Geetha do to help you to make the choice ?
Many people, guided by the saints and sages, seek solace in the teachings of the Geetha only when they are no more fit to think of material success.

Would you like to be one of them ?

This paper cannot give you the answer, nor can it itself guide you to success. It can only tell you how to interprete the Geetha in your own way and chart your own course to reach the goal of getting legitimate monetary prosperity (Dharm bhittika Artha Kam).

If you want a good job, good career or good business
please get a copy of the Geetha, with the necessary translation, and while referring to it, read this paper again.
